Would it surprise you if we said approximately 1 in 5 new or expectant mums in the UK face mental health challenges?
Did you know that approximately 75% of the UK’s workforce are parents or carers with 1 in 10 mums and 1 in 10 dads experiencing postnatal depression in the first year after the birth of their baby?
Did you know that suicide is the leading cause of maternal deaths within the first year after birth?
These statistics are huge numbers and quite sad to read don’t you think?
Are you a parent or soon to be a mum or dad, thinking of ways to prepare for the arrival or your little one? Do you live far away from family and friends and feel lonely in your parenting journey? It doesn’t matter if it’s your first child or your third, each baby is different, and we feel differently about each expectant birth, so preparing for each one will undoubtedly be beneficial for everyone.
Sometimes we can spend all of our time preparing for the physical aspect of the arrival of our baby without giving our mental or emotional wellbeing a second thought. But how strange is that when we know that our mental health helps to shape how we think, feel and behave? If we aren’t looking after our mental health, how can we expect to be the best parent we can be for our little ones? How can we expect to understand the thoughts and feelings of our children and respond in ways that they need? Research shows that the first three years of a babies life are the most important in laying the foundations for their physical, mental and emotional health throughout their lives. Yet this is the time of massive change for mums, going through matresence changes every aspect of who we are. Lets not forget dads too, they may not carry baby, but the go through a period of change physically, mentally and emotionally and are often the main source of support for mums and babies, they need support too!
What I know from research and from my own personal journey as a mum, is that we need to focus more on preparing mentally and emotionally for becoming parents. I want parents to feel less alone and have a support network around them to help them through the ups and downs of parenthood. I really struggled when I became a parent for the first time, this is the information and support that I needed and continue to need. It will help you understand your mental health, how you may feel, what you can do to prepare whilst having the confidence to say I am struggling without feeling shame. It will give you the permission to say ‘this is hard!’ without feeling weak. Our parent wellbeing groups are essential for every parent. Together we can make our community a place where we all feel connected, supported and thrive.
What we do
Our parent wellbeing programmes will help you to prepare mentally and emotionally for becoming a parent, and support you through your parenting journey. They are informed by my personal experiences as a mum, from my husbands experiences of becoming a dad, my work experience of supporting children and families and my education.
